It Started at the Boat Ramp
If you've spent enough time at a busy boat ramp, you've seen it happen.
A boater carefully walks down a wet, slippery trailer tongue trying to reach the winch hook. Another steps into cold water to guide the boat onto the trailer. Someone else decides to power-load the boat to avoid the hassle altogether.
It's become so common that most boaters simply accept it as part of the process.
But they shouldn't have to.
Every year, boaters risk slips and falls on slick ramps and trailer frames. They end up with soaked shoes and wet clothes that get dragged back into their truck. Many resort to power loading, which can damage boat ramps, erode launch areas, stress truck transmissions and brakes, and increase the risk of damage to the boat or trailer itself.
In many areas, power loading is discouraged, restricted, or even prohibited because prop wash can erode the ramp surface and surrounding launch area. Some ramps post fines or penalties for power loading, while others have outright bans.
For Chesapeake Bay boater and inventor Lee Behr, it never made sense.
Why should retrieving a boat require balancing on a slippery trailer, stepping into the water, or risking injury, fines, or costly damage?
There had to be a safer, smarter way.
Eight Years from Idea to Patent
What began as a sketch evolved through countless prototypes, real-world testing, and weekends spent at boat ramps across the Chesapeake Bay.
Every design change, every test, and every improvement brought the product closer to its goal.
After eight years of development, the result was a patented retrieval system unlike anything else on the market.
In April 2019, the United States Patent and Trademark Office awarded BEHR CLAW U.S. Patent No. 10,259,371 B1, recognizing it as a truly original innovation in boating equipment.
The BEHR CLAW name and design are also trademarked, protecting the quality and integrity boaters have come to trust.
Born on the Chesapeake Bay
Based in Bel Air, Maryland, BEHR CLAW was developed on the waters of the Chesapeake Bay, where changing tides, wind, and busy launch ramps provide the perfect proving ground for boating equipment.
What started as a simple idea quickly became an obsession.
Lee spent years designing, testing, and refining a solution that would allow boaters to retrieve their boat safely from the dock without climbing onto the trailer, stepping into the water, or relying on power loading.
The mission was simple:
Help boaters stay out of the water and retrieve their boat safely, confidently, and with less hassle.
From One Boater's Problem to Thousands of Happy Customers
What started as a solution for one Chesapeake Bay boater has grown into a product trusted by boaters across the United States.
From weekend fishermen and recreational boaters to seasoned captains, thousands of boaters have discovered a safer and easier way to retrieve their boat.
Not because of flashy marketing.
Because it solves a problem nearly every trailer boater faces.
A Family Business Built for Boaters
Today, BEHR CLAW remains a family-owned business based in Maryland.
We're not a large corporation. We're boaters who designed a product to solve a problem we've personally experienced countless times.
Every BEHR CLAW is built around the same philosophy that inspired the very first prototype:
Make boat retrieval safer, easier, and less stressful.
When you purchase a BEHR CLAW, you're supporting an American family business built on innovation, persistence, and a genuine passion for life on the water.
